Profibus

PROFIBUS is unique in offering a fully integrated solution for fieldbus in both discrete and process applications.

PROFIBUS DP is the profile for discrete (or factory) automation. An identical protocol, profiled as PROFIBUS PA, is used for process automation.

From the diagram you’ll see the single cable (the blue line) carrying communications between a controlling device (indicated as ‘DCS’, but it can also be a PLC or a PC) and individual IO devices. Above the blue line are typical factory devices controlled using PROFIBUS DP. Typical process layouts using PROFIBUS PA are indicated below the blue line as ‘segments’ of control.

Profinet

PROFINET offers a distributed I/O capability that is similar to  PROFIBUS but it offers more flexibity, more power, more opportunities and hence has far greater automation potential. Because it’s based on Ethernet, PROFINET facilitates the integration of manufacturing operations enterprise-wide, helping realize compelling business advantages. PROFINET can even integrate existing fieldbus networks easily (see right) helping protect existing investments as plants migrate towards an Ethernet future.

PROFINET uses the same Ethernet as offices and IT departments. However, its capabilities have been enhanced to meet the far tougher conditions encountered in industrial applications.

Ethernet’s larger address space means there’s almost unlimited scalability – so a system can be extended easily at any time. More bandwidth is available for data-intensive functions such as machine vision, which can work in tandem with control functions if required. There’s also more capacity for advanced application-specific ‘Profiles’ like Motion Control, Functional Safety and Wireless.

Ethernet is easily cabled and installed. Engineering, network management and maintenance are based on common internet tools, and Internet technologies are easily deployed. This leads to better managed plants that can be fully integrated into enterprise and IT networks, giving transparency right down to the factory floor if required.

PROFINET is modular, so a PROFINET system can be updated at any time. Not all capabilities need be utilized at once.
